Times New Roman issue in OL Connect templates after Windows update

A bug has been reported where Times New Roman renders incorrectly and appears in Italic in OL Connect templates following a recent Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 update. This issue appears to be specific to OL Connect, as the font continues to work normally in other applications.

Our R&D team has been able to reproduce the issue and we are actively investigating the root cause and working toward a permanent resolution.

Symptoms

The KB5068861 cumulative update and/or the KB5067036 non-security update for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 install a new version of the Times New Roman Regular and Bold font faces.

This new version is not loaded correctly by the Gecko embedded browser used by OL Connect. As a result, the browser incorrectly falls back to the Italic and Bold Italic variants in both Designer and output.

Workaround

Because we cannot redistribute Microsoft fonts, the workaround requires backing up the older Times New Roman version from a machine not yet updated with KB5068861, or temporarily uninstalling the update to extract the older font files (Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates).

Note: These steps must be repeated on all machines running OL Connect software, including workstations with OL Connect Designer and servers running the OL Connect Server engine.

Step 1. Create a backup of the older Times New Roman font (version 7.05)

Perform these steps on a Windows 11 machine without the KB5068861/ KB5067036 update installed (or after temporarily uninstalling it):

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to: C:\Windows\Fonts
  3. Right-click Times New Roman and select Copy.
  4. Paste it into another folder (e.g., Times New Roman v7.05) to save a backup of the older font files.

Step 2. Install the older font on the affected system

Important: If you previously uninstalled KB5068861/KB5067036 to obtain the old font, reinstall the update before proceeding.

  1. On the affected machine, create a backup of the new Times New Roman font by copying it from: C:\Windows\Fonts into a folder such as Times New Roman v7.10.
  2. Locate the folder containing the 7.05 Times New Roman font files (the older version).
  3. Hold Shift, then right-click the file times.ttf and select Install for all users.
  4. Repeat this process for timesbd.ttf.
  5. Restart the machine if possible.

In most cases, restarting OL Connect Designer and the OL Connect Server engine is sufficient, but a full system reboot is preferred.
